A new initiative led by the Feeding Iowans Task Force will provide fresh produce to Iowans in need. The newly established Iowa Gleaning Network is looking for volunteers, farmers, AmeriCorps members and hunger relief organizations willing to be host sites to help in the effort to harvest food left in fields due to grocery store visual standards. As much as 10% of the food grown in the U.S. is left in the field, while more than 300,000 Iowans do not have enough money to cover their basic food needs, according to the task force. Gleaning programs use volunteers to harvest leftover produce and donate it to local hunger relief organizations. More information on the program, links to organization applications, and applications for individual coordinator positions are available online.
