Fees rising faster than previously at Iowa regent universities

The Iowa Board of Regents is expected to approve increases in base tuition rates and mandatory fee hikes from 1.2 percent to 5.8 percent — continuing a pattern of fast rising mandatory fees, even during relatively slow tuition freezes, the Des Moines Register reports. Since the 2009-2010 academic year, the cost of mandatory fees has risen an average of 43 percent, from $880 to $1,500. In 2018-2019, in-state students will pay $240 to $352 more — and undergraduates in business, engineering and nursing tracks can expect even more, the Register reports. However, students have more say in mandatory fee rises than in tuition: each regent institution has a committee of students who review the mandatory fees and proposals for increases.
