Fewer Iowans filed unemployment claims last week

The number of Iowans who filed unemployment claims last week dipped to 39,395, a 10% decrease from the previous week when 43,997 claims were filed, new data from Iowa Workforce Development shows. The number of initial unemployment claims filed by Iowans last week totaled 5,279, a 14% drop from the previous week. The state agency also reported that $12.6 million in jobless benefits was paid out of Iowa’s unemployment compensation trust fund. Since mid-March 2020, $1.27 billion has been paid from the fund. The U.S. Department of Labor today reported that 576,000 initial unemployment claims were filed nationally last week, an increase of 193,000 from the previous week.
