For the fourth consecutive year, the Des Moines Business Record gave a nudge to Central Iowa business people who are striving to maintain or improve their physical fitness. The annual Fittest Execs competition drew about 80 people in three “fittest” categories and about 50 in four “most improved” categories.

In tests at the Waukee YMCA, participants were assessed in several ways: body composition, circumference measurements, push-ups, half sit-ups, flexibility and a three-minute step test. Cholesterol levels and blood pressure were also checked, but those results did not factor into the competition.

The winners and runners-up were honored at the June 16 Power Breakfast held at the Des Moines Club.

Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, The Other Health Plan and the YMCA of Greater Des Moines sponsored the competition.

In the fittest category, first place in the men’s under 50 group went to Ryan Parlee of Flying Hippo Web Technologies. Derrick Flippin of Work Source Staffing placed second.

Perennial top contender Wes Ehrecke of the Iowa Gaming Association won the men’s over 50 competition. Jim Holcomb of the Bradshaw, Fowler, Proctor & Fairgrave P.C. law firm and John Sorensen of the Iowa Bankers Association tied for the runner-up spot.

Among the women, Sara Weis of Internet Solver Inc. placed first in the under 50 category. Last year’s winner, Kimberly Baeth of Golden Openings Inc., placed second.

In the most improved competition, David Watson of LWBJ Financial LLC won the men’s under 50 title. Joseph Johnson of ServiceMaster Green placed second.

Bob Stouffer of Des Moines Christian School topped the men’s over 50 field, and Al McClatchey of Mercy Heart Hospital came in second.

Rebecca Moomey of Bankers Trust Co. took top place among women under 50. Denise Boring of Golden Openings was the runner-up.

Linda Blocher was the winner in the women’s over 50 category.
