Five ways to get out there

Spring fever infection rates are high – perhaps pandemic. What’s the corporate crowd to do? A colleague tells a story about a former co-worker who used to call his employer and beg off work with a “vision problem.” Cataracts? Temporary blindness? Double vision? “Nah”, he’d say, “I just can’t see myself coming in to work today.” With today’s generous paid-time-off policies, truthfulness is back in style. From here (it’s Thursday), the forecast for the early part of the week looks glorious. So exit the office and get out there. Here are five ways:

Follow Des Moines’ intricate trail system for a brown-bag lunch at Gray’s Lake. The trail system and park are so busy in the springtime that this suggestion becomes almost a cliché. But we all know how clichés are born – from frequent use, because they fit the bill.

Take in an Iowa Cubs game. Executives, plan on a loss of productivity on April 16 and April 19, when the Cubs have afternoon home games.

Have lunch at a restaurant that has a patio. For those who prefer a tranquil respite, the Art Center Restaurant at the Des Moines Art Center will be serving meals by the reflecting pool, weather permitting. For those who prefer a rowdier atmosphere, the list of patio bars and restaurants in Greater Des Moines is extensive.

Volunteer to shop for a nice gift for your client or for your supervisor’s birthday. Skip the enclosed malls. Instead, choose the East Village, West Glen or Valley Junction or anywhere the sun can shine on your face.

Sign up for Bike to Work Week, May 12-18. It’s good for your health, and the health of the environment. Tons of special activities are planned, including riding with former heavyweight but now svelte Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell. Details are available at www.bikeiowa.com.

Bonus: Accept an assignment on “five ways to get out there” and feign field research. But it’ll probably only work if you work for a media organization or serve on an employee morale committee.
