Betsy Fliger says it was her father who ingrained in her the strong work ethic she employs each day as an advertising coordinator for FBL Financial Group Inc. FBL is a holding company for Farm Bureau Life Insurance Co. and EquiTrust Life Insurance Co., which underwrite, market and distribute a variety of life insurance, annuities, mutual funds, and property-casualty insurance products and services in 45 states. As advertising coordinator, Fliger creates both corporate and agent advertising and places corporate ads in the media.

“We often partner with outside organizations to execute our media plan,” she said. “We’re very pragmatic and very process driven. Our [advertising] decisions are based on research and company data.”

Fliger grew up in Manly, Iowa, and received a business degree with a marketing emphasis from Buena Vista University in 1997. Her first job after graduation was with Strategic America as a traffic coordinator. By the time she left the Clive-based advertising and public relations company a year and a half later, she had been promoted to account executive. It was through that role that she met her next employer, as FBL was one of her clients.

“Both at Strategic America and here [at FBL], I’ve worked with so many people I consider mentors,” Fliger said. “I’ve learned a lot in the last seven or so years.”

Fliger enjoys the variety and the challenge of her work, and she says she doesn’t think she could tolerate a repetitive job for very long.

“I like coming to work every day because I get the chance to be creative and work with the details,” she said. “It provides a great mix for me. I also love being able to work with such great people.”

When not at work, the 28-year-old likes to spend time with her husband, Jeff, and their two dogs, Jaxson and Toby. She also works as a Longaberger consultant, selling that company’s baskets and accessories.

“That’s where you really see my entrepreneurial side,” she said. In fact, if she weren’t working for FBL, Fliger thinks she would be selling baskets full time.
