The World Food Prize Foundation has presented the Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application to Hale Ann Tufan of Turkey for her work to encourage women in science and farming. The Rockefeller Foundation endowed the award, which specifically recognized Tufan for “championing the incorporation of gender-supportive activities within the global agricultural research community, working across disciplines to ensure women farmers and scientists are fairly represented in the lab, in the field and at the table.” The award goes to agricultural scientists under age 40. Tufan, a plant breeder, is with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. Her work in sub-Saharan Africa won a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
