Blackbird Investments LLC will continue the rehabilitation of the former Younkers building at 713 Walnut St. in March 2016, two years after the building was destroyed by fire. Now called the Wilkins Building, the property was obtained earlier this year by Blackbird Investments, a Greater Des Moines investment and development group, from Madison, Wis.-based The Alexander Co. The rehabilitation project includes 60 apartments, 10,000 square feet of commercial space on the first floor and restoration of the Younkers Tea Room. The deadline to complete the improvements has been extended to March 1, 2017, according to a report to the Des Moines City Council.
