Four women will be inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame on Aug. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the State Historical Building.
This year’s Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame inductees are Judith Conlin, Teresa Hernandez, Dorothy Hubbard Schwieder, and Mary Parks Stier. Elizabeth Barnhill will receive the Cristine Wilson Medal for Equality and Justice.
Conlin: While teaching at Iowa State University, she co-founded the Iowa Women’s Studies Association; became the first chairwoman of the Ames Community School District’s Advisory Committee on Multicultural Non-Sexist Curriculums; and authored “How to Get Your Bearings – How to
get a Job: A Guide for Women Who Are Unemployed, Underemployed and/or Underpaid.” Conlin raised money for Planned Parenthood, and was executive director for the Animal Rescue League, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs.
Hernadez: As executive director of the Chrysalis Foundation, she is an expert on issues facing girls and women and is a model for making a difference in the community. She created Chrysalis After-School, a program that serves hundreds of adolescent girls in more than two dozen metro-area elementary and middle schools, and the Woman’s Alliance, a partnership of organizations sharing knowledge and best practices to support girls and women in Greater Des Moines.
Schwieder: A retired history professor at Iowa State University,Schwieder has written nine books, numerous book chapters and scholarly articles, a personal memoir of growing up on the Great Plains, and has co-edited a sesquicentennial history of Iowa State University.
Stier: Former president and publisher of the Rockford Register Star in Rockford, Ill. and the Des Moines Register, Stier placed 15 women into top roles as publishers and taught a class titled “The Emerging Leadership of Women in the 21st Century” at Drake University. She started The Brilliance Group, whose mission is to “bring the wisdom and grace of women’s leadership into the world.”
Barnhill: The executive director of the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault has spent the past 30 years working to end sexual violence and assist survivors. She is a founder and board member of the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence. Barnhill has been a consultant for many national organizations.
