The Des Moines City Council today is slated to vote on the second reading of an ordinance that would rezone 12 acres at the former Franklin Junior High School site from a limited neighborhood retail commercial district to a planned unit development. The project at 4801 Franklin Ave. would include a 30-room boutique hotel, micro-brewery, restaurant, bar, theater and five auditoriums with seating for between 100 and 4,000 people. Developer/owner Jeff Young has asked that the council approve both the second and third readings of the ordinance today because he wants to begin work on a restaurant and bar that would open next spring. Even if the council approves both readings of the ordinance, Young still must get approval for the project’s site plan. The Des Moines City Council agenda can be viewed here.
