Eight hundred children in the metro area are getting swim lessons this summer through Des Moines Parks and Recreation, thanks to a partnership with Friends of Des Moines Parks and grant funding from Variety – the Children’s Charity. Variety has been a partner in providing the service to Des Moines metro families for 11 years. During this time, Variety has granted more than $120,000 in support of swim lesson scholarships for children and families in need. Grant funding has also supplied new equipment used in lessons and training lifeguards, such as kickboards, life jackets, defibrillators and sinking manikins. Brooke Avila, board chair of Friends of Des Moines Parks, said: “The dedication from Variety in supporting youth swim lessons throughout the Des Moines Park and Recreation program has contributed to youth learning an invaluable life skill. With the support of Variety, the Friends of Des Moines Parks can continue to enrich the lives of children.” The learn-to-swim program led by the Friends of Des Moines Parks is in its 15th season.
