But the Saturday, July 21, event Hashmi Law Firm is sponsoring in Pete Crivaro Park off Southeast 14th Street has a trendy twist. Des Moines immigration lawyer Ferzana Hashmi is hosting a “Find a Legal Way to Immigrate” game. There will be nonalcoholic drinks and refreshments – and a life-size game board with a mockup of a jail and make-believe border. As in Monopoly, players draw cards hurling them into scenarios. But instead of putting a hotel on Baltic Avenue, a player may have to get his wife into the United States on a family visa.
The game aims to be a response to “Catch the Immigrant” games popping up on college campuses nationwide. At the University of Iowa, Boise State University and New York University, college Republicans described Catch the Immigrant games as controversial yet effective ways of sparking debate.
Hashmi’s retort? “In an ironic twist, conservative Iowans in the Midwest will respond to liberal New Yorkers by educating rather than throwing gasoline on an already volatile issue,” her invitation reads.
You can decide for yourself by catching the event from 2 to 8 p.m. In case of rain, call 699-8520.
