Gas prices reach new highs
Average gasoline prices have climbed 20 cents per gallon over the past two weeks, the Associated Press reported.
According to the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gasoline stations nationwide, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.07 per gallon, up from $2.87 two weeks ago. The previous record was $3.03 per gallon, which was set on Aug. 11, 2006. Since Jan. 19 of this year, gasoline prices have skyrocketed 88 cents per gallon.
The recent increases are due mostly to recent refinery problems and shutdowns that have cut refining capacity, Trilby Lundberg, CEO of Lundberg Survey Inc., said. Industry analysts are divided on whether gasoline prices may be peaking, or if prices will continue to climb as the summer driving season approaches.
