The Krause Gateway Center at 1459 Grand Ave. in downtown Des Moines has been awarded Gold LEED certification. The building, which was completed in 2018, was designed and constructed with sustainability in mind by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with OPN Architects, and general contractor Ryan Cos. US Inc. On average, Gold Leed buildings emit 34% less carbon dioxide and use 25% less water than conventional buildings. Other sustainability features of the building include fully automated LED lighting systems, a green roof with 16,000 native plantings, and building overhangs and sunshades that control heat and reduce energy usage. The Krause Center is the corporate headquarters for Krause Group, parent company of convenience store chain Kum & Go.
