The Indianola Independent Advocate is one of 10 online publications joining the inaugural Google News Initiative (GNI) Startups Lab, a six-month program that provides coaching and capital to help news businesses work toward sustainability, Indianola Independent Advocate founder Amy Duncan announced this week. Cohort members in the Local Independent Online Newspaper’s Pilot will work with professional coaches to design and launch a “revenue-generating experiment” to increase operational resilience, GNI said in a statement. The Indianola Independent Advocate launched in January 2019 to cover local news, education, sports and more in Indianola and Warren County. Other news organizations participating in the GNI Startups Lab are from Chicago, North Carolina, Canada, California, Florida and Wisconsin.
