Gov. Reynolds proclaims July Iowa Women’s Suffrage Month

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds last week signed a proclamation officially declaring July 2019 “Iowa Women’s Suffrage Month.” The announcement was made at the Iowa Federation of Republican Women’s Suffrage Centennial Gala. and commemorates the state’s 100th anniversary of voter equality.

The federation also honored Reynolds at the gala, deeming her an honorary Suffragette. 

“Our state’s first female governor has proclaimed the month of July Women’s Suffrage Month 100 years after a special session of the Iowa General Assembly ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on July 2, 1919,” Lori Leonard Reyman, Iowa Suffrage Centennial Gala chair and the federation’s 1st vice president, said in a release. “Iowa Federation of Republican Women is proud to help tell the story of how women won the right to vote in our state and throughout the land.”

The gala was held at the World Food Prize in Des Moines. In addition to Gov. Reynolds, the gala was attended by Linda Upmeyer, the first female Speaker of the Iowa House; the head of the national Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission; Women’s Hall of Famers, female legislators and many others.
