A grand opening of the Hotel Maytag Apartments & Event Center is planned for 4 p.m. Wednesday at the facility, located at 105 N. Second Ave. E. in Newton. The five-story Hotel Maytag was built in 1926 by manufacturing founder Fred Maytag. Jack Hatch, a Des Moines-area general contractor and developer, has completed a $16 million renovation of the structure that now includes 45 apartments, 39 of which were funded with low-income housing tax credits. The building also includes the Capitol II movie theater, the Midtown Cafe and the former hotel’s restored ballroom.
