After 15 years of planning and a year of construction, the first diverging diamond interchange in Iowa is scheduled to open at noon Dec. 1 where Grand Prairie Parkway meets Interstate 80 in Waukee and West Des Moines. On the day it opens, officials predict a traffic count of 12,000 vehicles. The interchange and roadway cost $50 million in federal, state and local tax dollars. The street and the interchange are expected to lessen traffic congestion on University Avenue, Hickman Road and Jordan Creek Parkway. In addition, the project is expected to entice developers to build in the area.
