Greenfield replaces Amber Lynch, who led Invest DSM since it was founded in mid-2019. Lynch left the organization in May to pursue other interests.
Greenfield, 61, began her career in urban planning and later moved into leadership roles in real estate development. According to her LinkedIn profile, Greenfield was director of real estate development for the Rottlund Company Inc. of Minnesota between 2005 and 2007 and division president of Rottlund Homes of Iowa from late 2007 through 2011.
In March 2012, Greenfield became president of the Windsor Heights-based Colby Management Co., where she managed a $100 million real estate portfolio and over 900-acre farming operation.
Greenfield was Iowa State Director for U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development from November 2021 to mid-January 2025. In the role, Greenfield led federal investments to improve housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunities in rural Iowa communities. She oversaw 11 statewide offices and a team of 70 people.
Greenfield was the Democratic nominee in the 2020 election for U.S. Senate. She lost the race to incumbent Joni Ernst.
“I speak for myself and the rest of the board when I say we found the right leader for the future of Invest DSM,” Invest DSM board member and Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen said in a prepared statement. “Theresa has an extensive background in leading organizations with strategic vision. With her expansive network and deep background in economic and community development, she rose to the top of a talented applicant pool and will ensure that our neighborhoods thrive well into the future.”
Information about Greenfield’s salary and when she will assume her new role were not immediately available.
As Invest DSM’s executive director, Greenfield will oversee a staff of seven, and lead the nonprofit’s investments in Des Moines’ Special Investment Districts, run programs that support homeowners and business owners, and continue building partnerships in neighborhoods across the city.
