Guest opinion: Keep calm and dream on

As an event planner with a design background, one could say I am somewhat of a control freak. I am often a prisoner of my own creative mind as I analyze every detail of my business. But when I embarked on the journey of business ownership, I realized very quickly that in order to succeed, I had to be okay with the chaos that seemed to be my new reality.

At first, I found myself desperately clinging to the meticulously chosen words in my business plan, fearful to step outside of the planned parameters into the unknown.  After a couple months of following my plan to a tee, I realized that in order for my business to succeed it was not only important that I allowed myself to stray, it was imperative that I did. I started this business to feed my soul and I couldn’t forget that.

Dare I say as a professional planner, I had to teach myself how to stop planning as much for the sake of my business?

One of the most important things I do as a business owner is allow myself to dream. On the days where I feel like I am spinning my wheels and not getting anywhere, I allow myself the opportunity to venture off into fantasy land, even if only for a half-hour. It is during this time that I consciously remove the roadblocks in my brain and simply ask myself, “What will make me happy?” By asking myself a broad open-ended question I am able to compile a list of random, yet totally relevant thoughts.

Things that pertain to all areas of my life come to light. I want to get outside more and start running again, learn how to bake, have more kids, write more, get back into theater, etc.  Whatever comes out, I welcome without judgement. This uninhibited list reminds me that in order to be the best me, I need to honor me. I may not get to everything right away, but I make a promise to myself in that moment that I will try. When I allow myself the freedom to do what I want to do rather than what I believe I need to do, I become the most creative me.

Suddenly the path begins to forge itself without me having to force it.

I think as busy humans who are constantly on the move serving others, we often forget about serving ourselves. We create excuses for ourselves as to why we don’t have enough time or money or talent. My promise to myself (and I extend this challenge to all of you), is to just do it anyway. Who cares if you are good at it? If it is good for your soul, that’s all that matters.

The next time you find yourself thinking, “I’ve always wanted to do that, BUT…” or “I wish I did this more, BUT…,” just do it anyway and then do it again and again. You may not see the benefits immediately but over time your heart will thank you and so will your business and the people around you.
