The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement plans to move into an $8 million, 16,000-square-foot building at 28th Street and University Avenue.

The project in cooperation with Drake University will offer more space than the institute’s current offices at Drake.

“The Institute has had a local, national, and international presence in its short lifetime and we are excited for the Harkin Institute’s physical space to match its caliber of programming, research, and outreach,” former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin said in a statement. 

The Harkin Institute, established in 2013, has added staff and programming, attracting 10,000 to events since it opened. The staff now includes 15 undergraduate Drake students and five research fellows. 

Backers have raised $6.6 million so far for the two-story building on the southwest corner of the intersection.
