The city of Harlan has officially been named the latest Blue Zones Community, a designation designed to inspire Iowans and their communities to improve their well-being. The Blue Zones Project is the centerpiece of Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative. Harlan was named a Blue Zones demonstration site in October 2012 and made several investments to better the health of its residents, including a $350,000 expansion of Pioneer Park’s 1.2-mile walking trail to include 10-foot-wide sidewalks. Harlan is planning a celebration later this summer to recognize the efforts of the entire community in becoming a certified Blue Zones Community. Fifteen Iowa communities are currently part of the Blue Zones Project. For more information, visit www.bluezonesproject.com.
