Dubuque-based Heartland Financial USA Inc. has been named a “Forbes Best Bank 2018” in the publication’s annual review of the largest publicly traded banks and thrifts. Heartland ranked No. 60 in a listing of the top 100 banking operations with assets of $9 billion to more than $2 trillion. Heartland was the only Iowa bank to make the list. It also was named a Forbes best bank in 2017. For the rankings, Forbes used statistics covering 10 metrics of financial health that were collected by SNL Financial through the third quarter of 2017. The data covered return on average equity; net interest margin; nonperforming loans as a percentage of loans; nonperforming assets as a percentage of assets; reserves as a percentage of nonperforming loans; Tier 1 and risk-based capital ratios; and leverage ratio.
