The research centers offer a wide range of services, and their collections include numerous books and periodicals, photographs, newspapers, county government records, census materials, manuscripts, audiovisual and map collections, and birth, death and marriage records. In addition, the State Historical Society’s assessment of its historical collections housed at the Centennial Building in Iowa City is moving into its final phase through a partnership with the University of Iowa Libraries. In 2014, the State Historical Society launched a comprehensive assessment of its entire collection of historic objects, some 209 million pieces of Iowa history housed at the State Historical Building in Des Moines, the Centennial Building in Iowa City and several historic sites across the state. The assessment is designed to inform future decisions about the preservation, accessibility and sustainability of the collection for current and future Iowans and researchers.
