Rob Orton, the Urbandale-based homebuilder and developer who is attempting to buy nearly 70 acres in River Point West from a railroad company, has signed a contract to buy an additional three acres that was the former location of Lumberman’s Wholesale at 1350 Tuttle St.
In January, Orton said he was attempting to buy what would be the largest development parcel in River Point West from Norfolk Southern Railroad.
The land stretches across the southern section of River Point West, a mixed-used project that lies south of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway between Southwest Ninth and 16th Streets.
The Tuttle Street property is owned by David Moffitt and was once under contract with Sherman Associates Inc., the Minneapolis developer who launched the River Point West project in 2007 under an economic development agreement with the city of Des Moines and the federal government.
Sherman is focusing efforts between Southwest Ninth and Southwest 11th streets with current plans for a hotel, apartment complexes and an office building. Orton hopes to close on the railroad property by June.
A closing date on the additional purchase was not available. Details of Orton’s planned development are not known, but he previously told the Business Record that he wanted to “change the scenery of what’s going on downtown.”
