Food Bank of Iowa has launched Hunger Free Holidays to help those struggling with food insecurity during the holiday season. The goal of the annual fundraiser is to raise $1 million, which will provide up to 4 million meals for Iowans in need. According to a news release, more than $600,000 has already been raised. The campaign began with a proclamation by Gov. Kim Reynolds declaring December 2020 as Hunger Free Holidays Month in Iowa. It recognizes the six Feeding America food banks in the state that provide food to more than 1,200 pantries. According to Feeding America, food insecurity has doubled this year, with it tripling for families with children. “This year is especially harsh, with high unemployment and thousands facing the fear of scarcity and hunger for the first time,” Michelle Book, CEO of Food Bank of Iowa, said in a release. Donations can be made at FoodBankIowa.org. For anyone who may be struggling, visit the Food Bank of Iowa’s website or call 515-564-0330 to find a pantry close by.
