Hy-Vee Inc. announced Tuesday it is discontinuing its Hy-Vee Triathlon events, which included timed competitions for elite athletes, amateurs and kids. However, the event’s producer, New Orleans-based Premiere Event Management, said it will continue the Labor Day weekend event this year as the Des Moines Triathlon. “We’re excited about keeping the event going,”said Bill Burke, owner of PEM, who is now seeking new corporate sponsors. Burke, whose company also produces triathlons in New York City, San Francisco and other major cities, told the Business Record he will run the Des Moines event this year regardless of whether he can find sponsors, but that the race’s future for 2016 and beyond rests with new corporate sponsors who can collectively provide between $100,000 and $150,000. Launched in 2007, the triathlon has raised more than $750,000 for charitable organizations. The event has provided more than $4.5 million in annual economic impact to Greater Des Moines, The Des Moines Register reported.
