Hy-Vee Inc. was named to Forbes’ list of America’s Best Employers for Veterans.

The West Des Moines-based retailer was ranked 149th on the list of 200 companies. NASA was the top-ranked company for veterans, according to the list published by Forbes and Statista Inc., a statistics portal and industry ranking provider.

Hy-Vee was the only company headquartered in Iowa included on the list.

The annual list was determined through an independent survey by Statista that included approximately 7,000 American veterans working for companies employing at least 1,000 people within the U.S. Survey participants gave their opinion on a series of statements related to general topics regarding their own employer, including atmosphere and development, image, working conditions, salary and wage, workplace, and diversity, as well as a set of topics specifically related to veterans in the workplace.

In 2013, Hy-Vee established Homefront, a program that partners with customers and communities to increase awareness of and support for organizations that serve veterans, active-duty military members and their families. Most notable is the Homefront Round Up held every November, in which customers are invited to round up their purchases at checkout. Hy-Vee matches all customer donations up to $100,000 with all proceeds benefiting Hope for the Warriors, Operation First Response, American Red Cross and the Puppy Jake Foundation. Hy-Vee has raised more than $2.7 million for veteran organizations.

Hy-Vee also holds a Veterans Day Breakfast every year. In addition, the company in a news release wrote that it actively seeks to recruit veterans and active-duty military members to work for Hy-Vee and its subsidiaries. Hy-Vee also holds special events for veterans and service members returning to civilian life to learn about career opportunities across its eight-state region, it said. Hy-Vee also provides specific benefits for veterans, such as a paid day off on Veterans Day, relocation assistance and hiring bonuses based on eligibility.

“As part of our mission to be the best place to work in America, we are honored to receive this recognition for our efforts in recruiting and retaining individuals who have dedicated their lives to protecting and defending ours,” Jeremy Gosch, CEO and president of Hy-Vee, said in a prepared statement. “This award reinforces our commitment to supporting veterans and active-duty military members as they transition to civilian life.”
