ICON Water Trails announced Monday a $1 million gift from Casey’s to support the project’s Center Street site in downtown Des Moines.

Casey’s will receive naming rights to a scenic overlook on the site, a news release said.

“We are incredibly grateful to Casey’s and its dedication to our community, its employees, and customers, who all benefit from ICON and its amenities,” ICON Water Trails Executive Director Stephanie Oppel said in a prepared statement. “The private sector in our region is truly exceptional, and it’s because of partners like Casey’s that we’re able to bring this project to fruition.”

ICON currently has 15 active access points across the region, which had more than 250,000 visits in a six-month time frame, according to a recent economic impact report. The access points’ total economic output was nearly $20 million, the report said.

To date, ICON has secured more than $99 million in funding, including $31.5 million from the private sector, the news release said.

The Center Street project is one of three ICON Water Trail projects under development downtown. Overall, ICON Water Trails will connect more than 80 sites along 150 miles of waterways in Central Iowa.

Construction at ICON’s Harriet Street site and Principal Point at the Scott Avenue Dam continue on schedule. ICON’s second whitewater access point at Fleur Drive is expected to go to bid this fall.
