IDOT awards grants funded through VW Environmental Trust settlement

The Iowa Department of Transportation has awarded nearly $4 million for 46 projects funded by the Volkswagen Settlement Environmental Trust program. The automaker was the subject of a complaint filed in 2016 by the Environmental Protection Agency, which alleged the company violated the Clean Air Act with vehicles sold between 2009 and 2016 that were equipped with “defeat devices” designed to perform differently during normal operation than during emission tests. According to a news release, Volkswagen agreed to settle some of the allegations with the creation of an Environmental Mitigation Trust to fund strategies that will reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides. Iowa will receive about $21 million from the fund for mitigation projects, which will be distributed through competitive application programs over the next several years. Applications for the second round of funding were received in February from private organizations, public transit systems, schools, local governments that own and operate diesel fleets and equipment. According to the release, $4.9 million was available across three project categories, with $1.1 million being available for the first cycle of Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Supply equipment for electric vehicle charging sites. A list of grants that were awarded for the second cycle of funding can be found here. A list of grants awarded during the first cycle of ZEV equipment can be found here.
