The Iowa Economic Development Authority wants to hire a state economist, a position that was eliminated 15 years ago, The Des Moines Register reported. Director Debi Durham said she will ask Gov. Terry Branstad to include $200,000 in the budget for the position and related expenses because “I just think it’s time.” Some question if the economist would be objective. “I wouldn’t think there could be much independence,” said Ernie Goss, an economist and director of Creighton University’s Institute for Economic Inquiry.
