A study by personal finance company NerdWallet found that Greater Des Moines is the ninth-best metropolitan area in the nation at managing credit, dealing with debt and budgeting for housing. The rankings were based on an examination of credit scores, debt and delinquency from the credit reporting agency Equifax, and data on household income, individual income and homeownership costs from the U.S. Census Bureau. In Greater Des Moines, credit card debt is 2 percent of median income, consumer debt makes up 42 percent of median income and the costs of homeownership are 26 percent of median household income.
