Iowa ranks No. 5 on a list of the nation’s top energy users, the website 24.7 Wall St. said.

Iowa’s large consumption of energy per capita was driven by residential and commercial reliance on liquified petroleum gas, which has a lower energy density than fuel oil or petroleum, according to the report.

The rankings are based on a study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Nearly all of the states on the list are sparsely populated. Wyoming ranked No. 1 in energy consumption, followed by Alaska, Louisiana and North Dakota.

Texas, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kentucky and Indiana rounded out the top 10.

The report noted that Iowans use lots of wind power, which amounted to 19 percent of its generated electricity.

The state consumed more than twice the amount of energy it produced in 2011.

On the other hand, Iowa is the largest producer of ethanol in the country, producing 27 percent of the nation’s fuel ethanol in 2011.

The Hawkeye State also ranked fifth for its consumption of energy for industrial purposes per capita.
