The Indianola City Council is considering constructing a new building for its fire and police departments and one for City Hall and the library, the city announced in a news release.

The cost of the two projects, if built in 2028, is estimated at $57.5 million. A new 48,000-square-foot public safety building would be two stories and be built near the city’s existing municipal building at 110 N. First St. The facility would include seven pull-through bays with space for 14-plus vehicles for the fire department and three bays for police vehicles. The building would also include administrative spaces for both departments, shared training spaces, and living spaces for firefighters.

A new 42,000-square-foot, two-story building located south of the existing library would provide space for City Hall, community rooms and the library. The current library is located at 207 B St.

“The proposed library and city hall creates a natural community hub near the center of town,” Indianola Library Director Michele Patrick said in a prepared statement. “Not only will the building provide much-needed space for the library’s collections and programs, but it includes meeting rooms available to community clubs and groups.”

More detailed cost information and the next steps will be discussed at the council’s May 2 meeting. Among the next steps the council will consider is whether to have a special election asking voters to approve a referendum to pay for the projects. The special election would be held Sept. 13.
