Ingersoll receives Vision Iowa grant
A group organizing streetscape improvements for a stretch of Ingersoll Avenue between 28th and 31st streets received a grant yesterday from the Vision Iowa board, although not for the amount it had requested. Restoration Ingersoll was awarded a grant of $275,000 from Vision Iowa’s Community Attractions and Tourism program. The group, which is a subcommittee of the Ingersoll Area Association, had requested $525,000 in funding toward its total estimated project cost of $2.3 million, but Soozie McBroom, a chairwoman for Restoration Ingersoll, said she was still “thrilled with the award.”
Project plans call for new curbs, sidewalks, raised planter beds, trees, street furniture, pedestrian lighting and modifications to the overhead utility lines. At Monday’s Des Moines City Council meeting, the council set a date of May 22 to receive bids for the first phase of construction, which is expected to begin in June.
The Vision Iowa board also awarded $50,000 for the development of a skate park in Creston and $100,000 for an aquatic center in Grundy Center.
