Iowa among six states in butterfly mission
Iowa and five other states will work to improve habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators along Interstate Highway 35. The interstate runs along the main route monarchs use to migrate between Mexico and Canada. The agreement calls for “a cooperative and coordinated effort to establish best practices and promote public awareness of the monarch butterfly, honey bee and pollinator conservation.” The Obama administration pushed for this type of program beginning in 2014, noting that honey bees alone contribute more than $15 billion per year to the value of crops.
