A bridge project in Iowa City has made the list of projects identified in the federal Bridge Investment Program. The list of projects contained in the $12.5 billion infrastructure improvement program was released today, and included a planning study to determine the feasibility of replacing the Burlington Street and Iowa Highway 1 bridges in Iowa City with a single bridge. Twenty-three projects were identified to receive a share of the $12.5 billion, with nearly $2.4 billion available this fiscal year. The Iowa City project is proposed to receive a $300,000 planning grant, or half of the estimated $600,000 cost of the study, the report shows. According to documents, the project should improve travel for the public and maintenance, while continuing to provide a critical connection across the Iowa River. It will also allow for utility crossings over the river without having to dig beneath the riverbed, the report states. Planning grants are available for projects in the early phases of development. Communities are later able to apply for a construction grant for development of a project.
