Enrollment at Iowa’s 15 community colleges decreased by 5.2 percent this fall, according to preliminary numbers released today by the Iowa Department of Education.

It’s the second straight enrollment decrease, following a 0.6 percent drop in fall 2011. Community college officials told the Business Record earlier this month that they expected a statewide decrease because the economy is strengthening after a recession.

Des Moines Area Community College this fall reported its first enrollment decrease in 14 years.
