All of the construction cranes towering over downtown Des Moines might have left the impression that construction employment is on the rise. In this case, looks aren’t deceiving. Iowa was among 23 states that added construction jobs between April 2015 and April 2016, and when evaluated on the percentage increase, it ranks second, the Associated General Contractors of America said in a release. The state gained 10,600 jobs over the period, a 13.5 percent increase. Hawaii led the way with an 18.4 percent increase calculated on the hard number of 6,200 new jobs. In terms of jobs, Florida added 30,100 over the year, to rank No. 1 in construction employment growth. Iowa Workforce Development reported today that the state’s unemployment rate edged up to 3.9 percent in April from 3.8 percent in March.
