he Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) forecasts that a total of $2.3 billion in state funds would be available for highway right-of-way acquisition and construction for the fiscal 2011 through 2015 period, as part of the DOT’s Draft FY2011-2015 Iowa Transportation Improvement Program presented to the Iowa Transportation Commission.

Of the funding, $1.2 billion will be used for preservation of Iowa’s existing highway system and for enhanced highway safety features, including $81 million for non-interstate pavement preservation, $35 million for non-interstate bridge preservation and $15 million for safety projects.

The highway portion of the program, which also evaluated investments in aviation, transit, railroads and trails, includes modernization investments of $268 million for Interstate 29 in Sioux City, $302 million for I-29/80/480 in Council Bluffs and $31 million for I-74 in Bettendorf/Davenport.

Also included is $110 million for a plan to widen I-35 from four to six lanes in West Des Moines.

The Iowa Transportation Commission will consider approval of the program at its June 8 meeting.
