Iowa Economic Development Authority board approves $389 million capital investment

Eleven Iowa companies received financial assistance from the Iowa Economic Development Authority board on Friday. The $389 million of new capital investment will help create 403 new jobs, and retain 44 jobs, the board said.

Among those to receive funds are Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. The company was awarded tax incentives through the High Quality Jobs program to expand its operations in Johnston. The plant genetics company plans to construct growth chamber rooms and additional laboratory space for new product innovations in soybean research. The project represents a $23 million capital investment and is expected to create 100 jobs.

The board also awarded tax benefits through the High Quality Jobs program to Google Inc. for a potential expansion of its current operations in the Council Bluffs area. If the company selects Iowa for this project, it would result in a $300 million capital investment and would create a minimum of 35 new jobs. Ultimately, the facility would create at least 50 jobs.

The board approved tax benefits through the High Quality Job program for John Deere Dubuque Works. The proposed project in Dubuque includes the purchase of new machinery and equipment that will increase the manufacturing capability and distribution of the company’s crawler product portfolio. The project has a capital investment of $24 million and will create 125 new jobs, of which 123 are incented, and retain 44 jobs.

Other companies awarded funds include Iowa City’s Alpla Inc.; Farley-based Behnke Enterprises Inc.; Geneseo Communications Inc., a telecommunications company, with plans to build a data center in Bettendorf; Mobile Track Solutions LLC, which plans to construct a new building at its Elkader facility; turf provider the Toro Co.; United Suppliers Inc., based in Eldora; Clive-based Weeks & Leo Co. Inc.; and Whirlpool Corp.’s Amana division.
