Iowa energy projects receive $9.36 million
Gov. Chet Culver this morning announced more than $9.36 million in federal stimulus awards made by the Iowa Office of Energy Independence. It’s estimated the 62 projects will save Iowans $4.7 million in energy costs annually, provide nearly $33.4 million in matching funds and create or retain 328 direct jobs.
The grants will go toward projects such as a technology demonstration initiative at the University of Iowa to expand its electric vehicle program; the installation of more energy-efficient lighting at Grand View University in Des Moines; and the installation of photovoltaic solar panels at schools across the state.
“Thanks to projects like these, we are growing our economy and, most importantly, creating jobs – right when Iowans need them the most,” Culver said in a press release. “Using federal stimulus funds, we are positioned to retain existing employers and grow a new energy industry that not only fits the landscape, but also becomes inextricably linked to Iowa.”
Projects were awarded in the categories of public sector, private sector, nonprofit sector, training and information, innovative projects and technology demonstration. Among the awards:
Technology Demonstration – University of Iowa: $250,000
The University will expand its electric vehicle program with a 57-kilowatt photovoltaic (solar) system capable of charging up to 47 electric vehicles. The project will showcase an electric car charging station with 21 parking spaces, in addition to a smart grid component.
Public Sector – City of Grinnell: $52,500
Grinnell will add attic insulation and will replace lighting, windows, chillers and the water heater for the Stewart Library, with an annual energy savings of $8,100.
Training and Information – National Center for Appropriate Technology: $93,847
National Center for Appropriate Technology’s Iowa Sun4Schools Program will provide public schools across the state with photovoltaic arrays that will provide hands-on photovoltaic installation training to local electrical contractors. There will also be an accompanying solar curriculum for students.
