Des Moines Register: The March 5 tornadoes that ripped through Central Iowa, killing seven people marked the fifth major disaster in as many years to strike the state. Since 2018, Iowa has been pummeled by catastrophic flooding, dozens of tornadoes and two hurricane-strength derechos. Iowa has racked up $52 billion in losses from natural disasters over the past four decades, federal data shows. Only nine states and territories in the country have experienced more destruction in that period. Iowa is the only inland state in the nation’s top 10 for disaster losses.
