University of Iowa Health Care provided more than $269 million in community benefits in 2016, according to a report released this week. Those benefits include $51.85 million uncompensated care and $13.87 million in free or discounted charity care that UI Health care provided. The results for UI Health Care are included in a statewide report by the Iowa Hospital Association. The 118 community hospitals in Iowa provided community benefits last year valued at more than $855 million. Three expense categories — bad debt, Medicare losses and Medicaid losses — accounted for more than $482 million of the total community benefit provided by hospitals in the state.
