Iowa Index of stocks remains flat in May

A majority of the 36 Iowa stocks tracked by the Business Record fared well in May, ending the month with gains in their stock prices. Fourteen stocks’ values dropped during the month, compared with 11 last month, however.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 23 Iowa-based public companies, declined slightly by 0.04 percent for May, compared with April’s slight increase of 0.88 percent.
 
The Dow Jones industrial average was similarly flat for the month, up by just 0.08 percent. The Nasdaq gained 3.62 percent.

At the top of the list of gaining stocks for May were Workiva, with a 15.87 percent price gain; American Equity Investment Life Holding Life Co., up 15.79 percent; Great Western Bancorp Inc., 7.93 percent; Casey’s General Stores, 7.33 percent; and HNI Corp., 5.38 percent. Notably, American Equity’s stock had had the largest price drop last month, when it was down 16.67 percent.

Companies with the biggest stock price declines in May included KemPharm, down 57.19 percent; NewLink Genetics Corp., down 27.64 percent, and Fidelity & Guaranty Life, down 10.17 percent.
