Des Moines Register: A Washington state dispute over a decades-old cancer insurance policy sold by the National Rifle Association has entangled Cedar Rapids-based insurance giant TransAmerica. In a lawsuit filed in November 2020, 87-year-old Ronald Shields of Newport, Wash., accuses TransAmerica and the NRA of failing to honor promises made when Shields and his wife bought a Cancer Benefits policy in 1986. The suit claims TransAmerica has refused to pay out the policy after Norma Shields’ death from colon cancer in 2018. The NRA has faced increased legal scrutiny in recent years, including for its insurance offerings.
