The Senate approved the bill last year, but it stalled in the House of Representatives. Rep. Jake Highfill, R-Johnston, the chief author of the House bill, said he’s reworking the proposal to gain support. “People love fantasy sports, and I am hearing about this all the time back home,” Highfill said. An estimated 354,000 Iowans play fantasy sports, according to the Chicago-based Fantasy Sports Trade Association. Players draft teams of college and professional athletes, and based on statistics from actual contests, compete against others in their league or game. It’s a $1 billion industry internationally.
