Iowa life insurance fraud case nets 15-month sentence for Boston man
A Boston man who tried to fraudulently collect millions of dollars in life insurance on his deceased brother was recently sentenced to 15 months in prison, the Iowa Insurance Division announced. On Sept. 17, Ming Xun Zheng (aka Kellerman Jason Zheng) was sentenced by the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts after pleading guilty to one count each of mail fraud and wire fraud. The sentence comes after Zheng pled guilty in February to a scheme in which he applied for over $11.5 million in life insurance and accidental death coverage on his deceased brother. Zheng placed three of the policies with Iowa-domiciled insurance companies that had a combined death benefit amount of $2 million. The sentencing culminates an investigation following a complaint made to the division in late 2018. Following the guilty plea, Zheng’s sentence in federal prison will be followed by three years of supervised release. Zheng was also ordered to pay $49,084.21 in restitution and a $200 special assessment by the court.
