Iowa outperforms region on Rural Mainstreet Index

Good news from Creighton University’s Rural Mainstreet Index. Iowa’s index rose to 67.1 in October from 56.2 the month before, even as the full index fell to its lowest level since April 2009. Iowa’s farmland-price index for October increased to 47.8 from 47.2 over the month, though 1 in 5 farmers in the full survey have negative cash flows. Iowa’s new-hiring index for October dropped to 58.7 from September’s 65.1, but economist Ernie Goss noted that’s still a strong reading. Rural Iowa job growth outpaced the urban areas in the past year, 2.4 percent vs. 1.1 percent. Read the full news release
