When it comes to women-owned businesses, Iowa is continuing to rise in the ranks, according to an annual report commissioned by American Express. The state ranked 24th overall nationwide with 90,193 businesses owned by women, according to this year’s State of Women-Owned Business Report. In 2018, there were 91,136 women-owned businesses in Iowa. For several years, Iowa remained at or near the bottom of the list, finally jumping to 30th in 2016 when the report started examining only post-recession data. This year’s numbers also saw increases, according to the report. Iowa ranked 40th in growth of number of women-owned firms since 2007 with a 5.4% increase, 15th in growth of jobs created with a 6.4% increase, and 19th in growth of firm revenues with a 11% increase. Nationwide, between 2014 and 2019, the number of women-owned businesses grew 21%, to nearly 13 million, and came to represent 42% of all U.S. businesses.
